To claim the early bird discount, book before the 15th July Horse Care Training Days with Richard Johnston-Smith, BHS Accredited Performance Coach. There are four days of training open to anyone who would like to develop their knowledge or prepare for the Stage 3 assessment. Each day you will work in a small group with Richard. The days will be divided between yard, with hands-on training, and classroom based sessions. The yard sessions will be hands-on practical including fitting and assessing tack, looking at conformation and clipping. The classroom based sessions will be theory including fittening, anatomy and physiology, and biosecurity. You will: Be assessed on your knowledge to manage day-to-day activity, care and welfare of horses under your responsibility, with an established awareness of current legislation for working within a stable yard environment. Show competence in understanding equine behaviour, physiology and measuring vital health signs. Be assessed on recognising and treating common conditions and nutritional requirements of the horse, including assessment of condition and measurement of nutrition alongside fittening of the horse. Be practically assessed on how to fit tack for both flatwork and jumping, in addition to the use of studs. You can book onto all four days or book onto individual days. Course Dates & Learning Outcomes: 30 Aug 2019 - Understand how to improve a horse's fitness - Understand horse anatomy and physiology - Be able to assess a horse’s conformation 27 Sep 2019 - Know the role, rights and responsibilities of a Groom - Be able to put equipment on the horse for flatwork and jumping - Understand how to manage a turnout area 25 Oct 2019 - Be able to put equipment on the horse for flatwork and jumping - Understand the nutritional requirements of a horse - Be able to clip a horse 29 Nov 2019 - Know how to use studs - Understand the use of bits - Know how to manage the health of a horse - Know about undesirable horse behaviour Also time to practise the practical tasks as chosen by participants.
