Safety

Each competitor must have appropriate insurance. The owner or, where applicable, parent or guardian shall be solely responsible for consequences of loss or damage done to, occasioned by, or arising from any child or animal in their care. Dogs must be kept on a lead at all times.

If you are attending the event alone, please inform the steward of your EMERGENCY CONTACT details.

All accidents/incidents/falls shall be reported to the secretary (whether or not First Aid attention was required), and assistance must be given in recording the event in the accident/incident book.

While every effort is made to maintain safety, The Mojo Queen and Muirmill Equestrian Centre will accept no responsibility for loss or damage to persons, equines, equipment, or vehicles while on Muirmill Equestrian Centre's premises.

Correct and safe dress must be worn at all times. Protective headgear must be worn when mounted on any part of the showground. It is the duty of riders, and in the interest of safety, to ensure that their headgear provides proper protection, is correctly fitted and remains in place.

Horses should not be left unattended or tied to the outside of lorries/trailers.

Stallions must be adequately restrained. They must be led from a bit, with a lead rope of a minimum length of 2.5m to include a chain of approximately 0.50m attached to the bit. A stallion disc must be displayed and visible on both sides of a stallion's bridle(s) at all times at shows. Stallions must not be left tied to a lorry, trailer, or any other vehicle. In addition to the two stallion discs, a length of white ribbon is to be worn in the tail of stallions at all times. Stewards, Judges, and Show Organisers have the jurisdiction to disqualify any stallion from the show if, in their opinion, it is behaving in such a way likely to cause accident and/or injury to other horses/ponies, competitors, their associates or any member of the public. The owner and rider are responsible for ensuring their stallion is appropriately restrained. Any stallion leaving its lorry or stables must always wear a bridle.

Smoking is only allowed in the designated smoking areas.

The outdoor warm-up is restricted to 8 riders only. See below.

Preparing to Compete

Show gear is unnecessary; however, clothing and hard hats must be suitable and safe.

Tacking up to take place within the designated parking area or at the walkway next to the arena.

NB: Due to insurance conditions, no mounting blocks are provided in the outside or warm-up arena. If you need one, please bring your own.

Please let the steward know you have arrived on arrival. The steward is located at the entrance of the main arena.

We run as an unaffiliated competition; however, our judges and stewards will point out anything they feel is helpful should you decide to join an association.

Warming-up and competing

Rules/Etiquette of the Collecting Ring

Once you have declared to the steward, begin your warm-up in the smaller of the two outdoor arenas. Come in from the outdoor warm-up 16 mins before your time.

·        1 groom per rider adjusting the warm-up jumps. In a busy jumping collecting ring, you can call out the practice fence before you turn to jump it. Do this before you get your line to the fence to avoid other riders crossing your path.

·        Ride away from the fence. Avoid circling or stopping after landing unless you're in a relatively empty warm-up arena. Keep the flow going to let others jump the fence after you.

·        You must follow the flags on the warm-up fences. Jump them in the direction they are marked up. Keep the red flag on your right and the white flag on your left.

·        No lunging.

·        No leading.

·        Pass other riders from left hand to left hand. So, if you're on the left rein, you should stay on the track while the rider coming towards you takes the inside track. Left hand to left hand – make it your mantra.

·        When walking, come onto the inside track to allow those in trot/canter to go around the outside.

·        No halting on the track.

·        When standing, do so in a corner so you are not in the way of others continuing to work in.

·        If you need to halt to check your girth or alter your tack, it's generally best to step out of the warm-up arena or close into a corner.

·        Teaching may only be done via earphones/headsets – there must be no teaching in the collecting ring.

·        Spectators are to be stood behind the barriers or in the gallery.

·        Please respect all staff and other competitors.

·        Inappropriate language or behaviour will not be tolerated.

PLEASE PICK UP AFTER YOUR HORSE IN THE ARENAS. MUIRMILL PROVIDES TOOLS AND DEPOSITORY AREAS FOR DROPPING AROUND THE WARM-UP AREA.

·        Avoid tailing other horses; it annoys others, and you and your horse could get kicked. Give other riders plenty of space.

Tail Ribbon Meanings

Red ribbons indicate a horse who is likely to kick out.

Green ribbons indicate a young or inexperienced horse.

Yellow ribbons indicate a general need for caution.

White ribbons indicate a stallion – accompanied by a Stallion Disc on the bridle.

NB: White ribbons may also indicate a horse that is for sale.

Forelock Ribbon Meanings

Red ribbons indicate a horse who is likely to be horse-shy

·        If you're carrying a schooling whip, be mindful of how much it sticks out – it's easy to brush or tap a passing horse accidentally.

Using the Facilities

Make sure you use the bins provided for your rubbish afterwards.

Toilets are adjacent to the restaurant.

Strictly No Access

Biosecurity at Muirmill means we have no access to their livery yard facilities. Please stay within the arena and restaurant areas only.

Departing

Please pick up after your horses. If any feed or bedding materials are dropped on the yards, please clear them and help to keep the yards and warm-up arena clean and tidy.

Please ensure your parking area is clear of all poo, hay and litter before leaving.
