Vaulting
The competition will be run according to BEV and FEI Rules with exceptions made to accommodate a transfer between 2023 rules and the significant rule changes introduced by both BEV and the FEI in 2024. These exceptions can be found in an Update to the RDA Vaulting Rules for 2024 which can be requested at any time from the RDA UK National Office.
Following the significant changes made to both BEV and FEI Vaulting Rules for 2024, RDA Vaulting Rules are clarified as follows:
Compulsories
1. Where the vaulter is performing their freestyle immediately after the compulsories they can choose whether to dismount in between the two routines or not. There is no deduction for staying on the horse/barrel in between the routines and the leg lifts or leg changes will be scored alone.
2. Vaulters performing on the barrel should keep a regular and steady count to replicate a horse’s stride as accurately as possible. As a guide, 4 “strides” could be taken as 4 seconds. The vaulter may have a coach counting ‘strides’ for them if they wish, and there will be no deduction for this.
3. The horse score will be 25% of the total mark for the Compulsory routine (all competitors on the barrel will receive the same horse score). The remaining 75% of the score will be Technique, as per FEI and BEV Rules.
4. Compulsories used will be as per BEV 2023 rules, not 2024 rules, with the exception that the dismount is NOT scored for any set of compulsories. Compulsory moves must be performed in the order detailed below, and to the specifications detailed below (e.g. no leg changes at Pre-Novice level). The compulsories are already listed in the 2024 RDA Rule Book but for clarification/confirmation, they are:
Pre-Novice Compulsories |

BEV Individual classes have changed some levels to have a 45 second freestyle instead of 60 seconds. The maximum time allowed for RDA Individual Vaulting freestyle routines will remain at 60 seconds.
Teams/Squads – Freestyle
The requirements and permitted moves for teams at all FEI levels have been changed to improve horse welfare. The most significant changes for coaches and vaulters are:
· Triple exercises are no longer permitted at 1* level and no longer compulsory at 2*/3*
· The maximum time allowed for freestyle routines is now 3 minutes at 1* and 3 minutes 30 seconds at 2* and 3*.
In RDA Vaulting, we already do not permit more than two vaulters to be on a horse at the same time. We are permitting triple exercises on the barrel but these are not compulsory. These rules will remain unchanged.
In RDA Vaulting, we give a time limit of 4 minutes for the freestyle routine in the Team Competition. For 2024, the maximum time allowed for RDA Vaulting Team freestyles will remain at 4 minutes, but there will be no penalty for teams whose routines are above 2 minutes and 30 seconds. This reflects the enormous amount of planning involved in preparing team routines: groups who have been working on a 4-minute freestyle for half a year will not be required to shorten their routines, and groups who are now working to the new BEV Guidelines will be able to use their routines in RDA competitions as well. In the interests of planning training, it is expected that the 2025 RDA Rules will be adjusted to fit FEI Guidelines, meaning that the maximum time allowed in 2025 will be 3 minutes.
Consideration of the horse – Artistic Score
A major advance in the FEI Rules for 2024 is the introduction of a score for consideration of the horse as part of the Artistic score in freestyle routines. This is in addition to scores for harmony with the horse already given in both compulsory and freestyle routines as part of the Technique score. This element applies to individuals, pairs (pas de deux) and teams.
This element will be introduced in RDA Vaulting in 2024, in line with its introduction in BEV competitions. It is an important factor in protecting horse welfare and will reward vaulters and their coaches who choose moves, transitions and routines with the horse’s wellbeing, ability and confidence in mind.
Further details can be found on the FEI website using the link provided below.
Other changes
The FEI and BEV now permit the use of draw reins instead of side reins. These will also be permitted in RDA Vaulting in 2024, provided that they are applied correctly as per FEI Rules in the FEI Vaulting Guidelines 2024, p.23.
Side reins may be unclipped after the final freestyle and before the final salute to the judge. At the very latest, they should be unclipped as soon as the horse exits the competition arena.
In RDA Vaulting, horses may be led into the arena with side reins unclipped, but they must be clipped on prior to the trot circle.
Further information
It is highly recommended that all coaches and, where appropriate, vaulters, familiarise themselves with the rule changes and information produced by the FEI. A number of presentations on these changes are available here:

Performance Showing
What is Performance Showing?
Firstly, these classes have nothing to do with an equine beauty contest! Conformation of the horse/pony is not taken in to account and lumps & bumps are not looked at.
These classes come in three different formats to accommodate all riders:
Class 1. Walk and trot on the leading rein.
Class 2. Walk and trot off the lead rein.
Class 3. Walk, trot and canter.
How is Performance Showing judged?
The judging is conducted by looking at the harmony between the rider and their horse/pony, the turnout and, most importantly, the overall impression. Basically, the judge is looking for a happy partnership regardless of the occasional nerves!
What to Wear.
You do not need to have the most deluxe showing jacket or canary jodhpurs! Make sure that you are clean and tidy with nicely polished boots and that things fit as well as possible.
Have fun turning your horse or pony out to the best of your ability.
What is the point of the performance Showing Classes?
These classes provide an excellent stepping stone for all riders who may wish to progress towards dressage, for example. It is a chance for riders to show off their riding ability at their own level and to design a short individual show to suit them and their equine mount.
Video recordings are available on how to set up and conduct your individual show for all three classes on the RDA Website.
How to Film your virtual Show
In the Virtual Shows you will need to film all round your horse/pony whilst it is standing still and then film your individual show. There is not a Championship offered within the RDA Virtual Shows.

Musical Ride/Carriage Drive DVD Competition
Each entry should present a drill ride or carriage drive with riders and helpers smartly dressed – for example in their matching group sweatshirts - on suitable ponies/horses. If they wish to use modest fancy dress, for example to dress as soldiers to reflect marching music, then that is also acceptable.
There are two classes for the Drill Ride, one is for those riders who are led, with or without side walkers. The second one is for those riders who ride independently, without leaders or side walkers. (Their coach may stand at the side of the arena in case of an emergency. In both classes, presentations will be marked down if the ride is ‘called’.
BACKGROUND
Since the inception of this competition, it was planned that Groups should go ‘BACK TO BASICS’ where the performance of a Musical Ride/Carriage Drive could reflect the coaching of flatwork skills and school movements which are included in most RDA sessions. The competition also invites groups to demonstrate imagination and innovation in their coaching methods which make their RDA sessions so enjoyable for all our participants.
Music has been shown to be a powerful element to improve and energise the performance of both horse and rider or carriage driver and each year the judges look forward to seeing a wider use of music and movements to do just that.
Once again, the judges are most definitely not looking for ‘professional’ productions.
COMPETITION RULES AND GUIDELINES
1. Participants - For each ridden entry, in both the led and independently ridden classes, there can be a minimum of 3 riders and a maximum of 8 riders. There can be one or more carriages in the driven class.
2. Timings – Each performance should include a short, clear introduction. The introduction should include the title of the ride/drive and the name of the group. Wherever possible, the riders/carriage drivers should introduce themselves in whatever way is considered suitable. The judges are keen to be aware of the participants’ abilities and personalities before watching their performance. The introduction can be with or without music. The performance should also include an ending where riders/drivers perform a halt in time with the music ending. Including the introduction, the whole performance must be at least 6 minutes and not exceed 9 minutes.
3. Ages - Entries may have mixed age groups.
4. Health and Safety - Hats, footwear, tack/harness etc. must conform to all current RDA Health & Safety standards. If skirts etc. are worn trousers/jodhpurs must be worn underneath if saddles are used. Marks will be deducted if any RDA H&S criteria are not met. All equipment/props and dress used should have had a risk assessment to ensure that it is safe for use in an RDA riding/carriage driving session. Riders must ride astride unless a side saddle is used.
5. Music – The performance can use music of any genre and use more than one piece of music. Vocals are acceptable if they are not too distracting. However, please bear in mind that the music needs to be clearly heard by the judges watching so the original recording quality is important.
Choosing music which is suitable for walk (4 beat rhythm), trot (2 beat rhythm) and, where used, canter (3 beat rhythm) will enhance your performance and marks. It needs to have energy, and motivate the riders, drivers and helpers to produce an entertaining performance. Dance and marching type music can work well for drill work.
6. Choreography – Try to make the floor patterns as interesting as possible and include imaginative and innovative school movements which can be used to extend those usually used in Group sessions. Ideas can be discussed with your County or Regional Coach who will be pleased to help and advise you.
7. Filming – The judges are looking for a production which includes a view of the whole ride and also zooms in for close ups occasionally at appropriate moments.
8. Scoring – An example score sheet can be downloaded from the RDA website.
9. Entries – Each group may submit multiple entries for each class of the competition.
All video’s must state clearly the class, title of the Ride or Carriage Drive, date of video and the name of the group and region.
ALL RIDDEN DRESSAGE TESTS WILL BE IN A 20 X 40 ARENA
